To borrow a phrase, “good things come to those who wait”.
While that is fair advice, it’s not the whole story. After all, waiting is a state of inaction—of stillness—as you pause to see the results of a previous action. Cause and effect, if you will. Another phrase that you’ve probably heard, “patience is a virtue”, follows a similar train of thought. But has waiting at the back of the line, or shying away into the shadows, ever gotten you the thing you desire?
When I say the thing you desire I don’t mean just possessions. It’s true that most people love to have something shiny and new, and there’s nothing wrong with that. This advice applies to both those new, shiny things, as well as those less tangible. For me, as an author, it would come as no surprise that one of the things I want is success with my writing. To have a stranger reach out to me, and tell me how they’ve enjoyed my book. I wouldn’t say no to finding myself on the NYT bestseller list, either.
For that to happen, I need to make it happen. I could wait forever, but success won’t just arrive unannounced without some work on my part. It’s the same for anything in life. Whatever it is that you truly want, you have the power to make it happen.
